Senator Byrd made the standard Democratic weak statement about the capture of Saddam Hussein. You have heard it from most of them. The soldiers did a great job in capturing him, but that does not change the fact that we shouldn’t be there in the first place. It was the wrong place, and the wrong time, blah, blah, blah. Strangely, Dean was alone among the Democrats in claiming that America was no better off for Saddam’s capture. Even Byrd didn’t go that far.
I’m not sure why, but the folks at Howard Dean’s blog are just beside themselves praising Byrd for his insightful foreign policy (of cut and run). Included is this wonderful statement from a Dean supporter.
Senator Byrd is such a role model. Whenever I am weary, thinking I can’t possibly keep up with work, home, elder care, etc., etc., I look to Senator Byrd. He keeps working and fighting EVERY SINGLE DAY. I recall when Sen. Byrd’s beloved dog died during the march to war. Sen. Byrd was obviously very sad, but Sen. Byrd kept going and admonishing the president and the Congress for their lack of critical thinking on the matter. I really empathized because my five-year-old dog was very, very ill (Lyme nephritis) at the time and I looked to Sen. Byrd for the courage to keep working, keep fighting the war, and to look after my dog and see her through her passing. But beyond the personal, Sen. Byrd gives me the strength to keep going on the political front. What a role model he is to all of us. Thank you, Senator Byrd!
Now, I know that most of you don’t work EVERY SINGLE DAY, like Senator Byrd. And unlike Senator Byrd, you get tired and discouraged. So, when any of you are tired, or are discouraged, think of Senator Byrd. He fights EVERY SINGLE DAY, even when his dog is dying. That should be enough to re-energize even the most lethargic of you.
